Bangladesh seeks Swiss investment, trade access continuation
Bangladesh today underscored the importance of continued preferential market access and increased Swiss investment as the two countries reviewed their growing economic partnership during bilateral political consultations in the capital.
The sixth round of biennial Bangladesh-Switzerland political consultations was held at the State Guest House Padma in Dhaka, according to a joint press release issued by the foreign ministry here.
Foreign Ministry's Secretary (East and West) Ambassador Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam and Assistant Foreign Secretary and Head of the Asia Pacific Division at Switzerland's Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Markus Leitner led their respective delegations.
The meeting reviewed the full spectrum of the longstanding and multifaceted bilateral relationship and explored avenues for expanding cooperation across priority sectors.
The two sides discussed a wide range of issues, including strengthening diplomatic relations, economic cooperation, skills development, climate action, healthcare collaboration and private sector partnerships in emerging sectors such as technology and information and communication technology (ICT).
Recognising economic cooperation as a key pillar of bilateral relations amid growing annual trade and a strong Swiss investment presence in Bangladesh, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening economic engagement and fostering a more conducive environment for businesses in both countries.
During the consultations, Bangladesh highlighted the importance of retaining preferential market access and attracting greater Swiss investment to support its economic growth and development aspirations.
The two countries also reiterated their commitment to shared values, including democracy, human rights, multilateralism, respect for international law and a rules-based international order.
They exchanged views on regional and global developments and stressed the need for sustained international attention to the Rohingya crisis and its durable resolution.
The discussions further covered enhanced cooperation in multilateral forums, including at the United Nations and international Geneva, reports BSS.
Later in the day, Ambassador Markus Leitner and the Swiss delegation paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam.
