Eminent writer Badruddin Umar passes away

Badruddin Umar, eminent writer of Bangladesh psees at 94.



Prominent writer, researcher and left-leaning intellectual Badruddin Umar passed away on Sunday. He was 94.

He breathed his last at Bangladesh Specialised Hospital around 10am, said Jatiya Mukti Council Secretary Faizul Hakim.

Hakim said Badruddin Umar had long been suffering from various age-related complications. His condition deteriorated on Sunday morning, prompting his admission to the hospital, where he died shortly afterwards.

Badruddin began his professional career as a part-time lecturer at Dhaka University before founding the Department of Sociology at Rajshahi University.

He also served as president of the Bangladesh Krishak Federation and was the central coordinator of the Democratic Revolutionary Alliance.

At one stage, Badruddin Umar was a member of the central committee of the Communist Party of East Bengal. In 2003, he founded the Jatiya Mukti Council and took charge as its president.

In 2025, Umar had been named a recipient of the Independence Award, Bangladesh’s highest civilian award, but he refused to accept it. - UNB
