The deceased, Muntasir Fahim, was the eldest son of Rezaul Islam Badal of Chikna village in Sadar upazila. He was a student of City University Malaysia.
Quoting the family, police said Fahim had returned home four months ago as the university was temporarily closed. He was scheduled to return to campus next Saturday.
Around 9 pm on Thursday, the accused, Ohedul Islam Anik, arrived at Trishal Police Station carrying a Chinese axe and told police, “Fahim ruined my life, so I killed him with a Chinese axe.”
Police later detained Anik and recovered Fahim’s body from the east side of the Trishal Government Nazrul Academy school grounds. Anik is the son of Zahirul Mandal of Ward No. 4 under Trishal Municipality.
Fahim's father, Rezaul Islam Badal, said, “My son came home as his university was closed, and he was supposed to return on Saturday. I don’t know why he was killed.” He alleged that Anik had planned the murder due to a previous dispute and demanded justice for his son's killing.
Mansur Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Trishal Police Station, said the two had been close friends for a long time but had an ongoing conflict. “There was an argument between them at night. At one point, Anik hacked Fahim with an axe, killing him on the spot,” the OC said.
Police said the body has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Anik is in custody, and further legal action is underway, reports UNB.
