Akhter Hossen, member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has lodged a formal complaint with New York authorities following an egg attack on him, allegedly carried out by individuals linked to the Awami League.

Akhter confirmed the filing of the case in a video message posted online on Thursday. According to him, the complaint was registered at a police station near John F. Kennedy International Airport at around 11:00 a.m. Bangladesh time, after consultations with local law enforcement.

The incident occurred on Monday, 22 September, when Akhter Hossen and NCP leader Dr Tasnim Jara arrived in the United States to participate in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). According to Akhter, the assault began at the airport and continued later near their hotel.

“After the attack at the airport, individuals affiliated with the Awami League approached our hotel lobby intending to assault us again. At that moment, NCP leaders, activists, and our well-wishers in the US intervened and contacted the police to prevent further violence,” Akhter said.

He added, “We have filed the case against those responsible for the attack and attempted assault. These individuals are linked to a political organisation accused of committing genocide and crimes against humanity in Bangladesh.”

Akhter emphasised that the NCP is determined to pursue legal action against perpetrators of political violence, both within Bangladesh and abroad. “We are committed to ensuring that Awami League-affiliated perpetrators face justice, and we will not allow them to evade accountability by operating across borders,” he said.

The complaint comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of upcoming international engagements by the NCP, with the party highlighting concerns about the safety of its leaders and activists abroad.
