5 held over mugging in RAB disguise at Uttara

Police in a drive have arrested five members of a gang from different parts of the capital in connection with their alleged involvement in snatching  Tk one crore in guise of Rab personnel from Uttara area of Dhaka on June 14.


The arrestees were Md Hasan, 35, Golam Mostafa alias Sahin, 50, Sheikh Md Jalal Uddin alias Rabiul, 43, Imdadul Sharif, 28 and Saiful Islam alias Shipon, 27.

Golam Mostafa was a sacked police officer while Jalal was a retired army official.

Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in different parts of the capital and arrested them on Wednesday night, said Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Thursday.

Police also seized Tk 22.10 lakh in cash, Tk 12 lakh deposited in bank and a microbus.

When briefing, police said after the mugging incident, police identify the microbus and its driver involved in the incident using technology.

A team of Uttara police arrested the microbus driver Md Hasan, from Khilgaon area and recovered a fake nameplate and Tk 8,500 in cash from his possession.

Based on Hasan’s confession, police later seized the microbus used in the robbery from a garage owned by Swapan Mia at the Madartek intersection under Sabujbagh Police Station.

After checking the CCTV footage, the DB Uttara police identified the others and arrested the mastermind of the mugging incident Golam Mostafa around 10:40 pm on Wednesday.

Police also recovered Tk 13.34 lakh from his possession.

Later, police arrested the three others from Adabar area and Sabujbag area and Airpor Rail Station of the city.

Police also recovered fake ID cards, sticks, and signal light, moneybag with Army logo, cheque books of different banks and mobile phone sets from their possession.

They had long been involved in robbery in the guise of Rab and police, said Talebur Rahman.

However, police are trying to arrest others, he said.

A group of muggers wearing Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) jackets snatched over Tk 1 crore from a distributor of mobile financial service Nagad in the capital’s Uttara area on June 14, reports UNB.
