Arrest
Brahmanbaria, Apr 22 – Police arrested two people in connection with their alleged involvement in unleashing torture to a woman after tying her to a coconut tree, from Madhyapara village in Sadar upazila of Brahmanbaria district on Tuesday.
The arrestees were identified as Sharmin Akter, wife of Haidar Ali, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Saudi Arabia.
The victim lodged a complaint with the Sadar Police Station on Monday night, said Mozaffar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
The incident came to light on Monday as the video footage of the incident went viral in the social networking site Facebook.
According to the complaint, Sharmin married Haidar, son of Mantaj Mia, 17 years ago. The couple had been blessed with a son and a daughter.
Haider used to live in Saudi Arabia for the past ten years and just nine months ago he came to his village and again returned to Saudi Arabia.
Sharmin often had a heated argument with the family members of her in-laws.
On Monday afternoon, Sharmin and her two brothers-in-law—Mangal Mia and Joynal Abedin-, sisters-in-law—Marjina and Moyna and nephew and niece, engaged in a heated argument and at one stage, she was beaten by her brother-in-law Mangal Mia.
Later, they beat her two children and tied Sharmin to a coconut tree.
Sharmin also claimed that the family members of her in-laws took Tk 2 lakh from her husband but did not return yet.
Ripon Mia, a member of no 3 ward of Sultanpur Union Parishad, said it is said that Sharmin allegedly beat her father-in-law and the scuffle took place over the issue. However, he rescued Sharmin while being tortured, said the UP member.
Based on the complaint from the victim, police arrested Mangal and Joynal from the spot, said OC. - UNB
