In a shocking incident that has raised fresh concerns about public safety, two women sustained burn injuries when unidentified miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a moving CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the Aturar Depot area of Chattogram city on Sunday.
The victims have been identified as Laila Begum, 50, daughter of Kabir Ahmed, and Jharna Begum, 30, daughter of Badsha Mia. Both are residents of the Raozan municipality area.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the auto-rickshaw was carrying five passengers, including the two injured women, and was en route to Kutubdia Malek Shah Darbar, a well-known religious site. As the vehicle passed through the Aturar Depot area in the afternoon, assailants suddenly threw a petrol bomb at it, causing flames to engulf the rear portion of the auto-rickshaw.
Passersby rushed to the scene and helped douse the flames. The injured women were quickly taken to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Nurul Alam Ashek, in-charge of the CMCH police camp, confirmed the incident and said law enforcement agencies are already working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. “We are investigating the motive behind the attack. Security footage from nearby establishments is being reviewed,” he added.
The other three passengers, including the driver, reportedly escaped unhurt but remain traumatized.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of political motives or personal enmity, but said it is too early to speculate.
The incident has triggered panic among local residents and commuters, with many expressing concerns about the safety of public transportation. Police have increased patrols in the area and set up checkpoints to prevent further incidents.
Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
