Two men were killed, and another injured, in a violent mob beating in the Sylhetia Bazar area of Kamrangirchar on Wednesday night. The victims have been identified as Nadim, son of Sultan Mia from Shahidnagar in Lalbagh, and Masud, son of Sona Mia from Acharwala Ghat in Kamrangirchar. Sohag, a 30-year-old man, was injured in the attack and is currently in police custody after receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Sub-Inspector Amanullah Aman of Kamrangirchar Police Station reported that Masud was killed instantly after being beaten by the mob. Nadim, who suffered critical injuries, was rushed to DMCH, where he was later declared dead around 11:30 PM.
According to Inspector (Investigation) Sheikh Lutfor Rahman of Kamrangirchar Police Station, the violent confrontation appears to be linked to a local businessman’s extortion case. The businessman had filed a complaint against several individuals for extorting money in the area. On Wednesday night, a group of four to five men allegedly went to Sylhetia Bazar to pressure the businessman into dropping the case. During the confrontation, the situation escalated, leading to a quarrel.
The commotion attracted the attention of locals, who captured three of the men involved and began beating them. Masud was killed on the spot, while Nadim and Sohag were rushed to the hospital. Sohag survived, but the injuries to both men were severe. The attackers managed to flee the scene before police arrived.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with efforts underway to capture the remaining suspects. Kamrangirchar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
