A violent clash between locals and members of the banned militant group Hizb-ut-Tawhid left 15 people injured in Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur on Monday morning.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Asifa Afroz, around 40 Hizb-ut-Tawhid members were secretly gathering at a house in the Nagdah Sidam area at around 8:00 am. When news of the meeting spread, local residents attempted to intervene, resulting in rising tensions.

The confrontation quickly escalated into violence, with both sides armed with sharp weapons and sticks. The ensuing clash left 15 individuals wounded. During the altercation, locals vandalized two houses and set fire to four others, all belonging to activists of Hizb-ut-Tawhid.

Four of the injured were immediately transported to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for medical treatment.

Upon receiving reports of the disturbance, law enforcement agencies, including police, army personnel, and detectives, swiftly arrived at the scene to restore order. Seven individuals were arrested in connection with the violence. Among those taken into custody were two women, including a pregnant woman, who were brought in for questioning.

Pirgachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazmul Haque Sumon confirmed that the militants had planned the meeting, which ultimately triggered the unrest in the area. To ensure peace, additional police forces have been deployed to the region, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further violence.
