Mother, 8-Month-Old Niece Stabbed Dead in Cumilla

A 24-year-old man allegedly stabbed his mother and eight-month-old niece to death and seriously injured his sister-in-law in Cumilla's Debidwar upazila on Monday (21 September).

The incident took place around 8:30am at the house of Mostafa Master in the southern part of Barashalghar village under Barashalghar Union.

The deceased were identified as the suspect's mother, Peya Begum, and his eight-month-old niece. His sister-in-law, Rabeya Begum, was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

According to locals, the man, identified as Imon, suddenly became agitated and attacked his mother with a sharp machete. He then allegedly attacked his infant niece.

When Rabeya tried to intervene, Imon allegedly attacked her as well, leaving her seriously injured.

Following the incident, local residents detained Imon and locked him inside a room. They rescued Rabeya and rushed her to a hospital for treatment.

Debidwar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said police were heading to the scene after receiving information about the incident.

"Preliminarily, we have learned that Imon had been ill for a long time. However, the reason behind the incident has not yet been confirmed," he said.

The OC said further details would emerge after police reached the scene and conducted an investigation.
