
Police recovered the bullet-riddled body of Emon Sheikh, son of Sobhan Sheikh, from a fish enclosure south of Aronghata Railway Station in the city's Paharpur area around 6:15pm.
Police and local residents said locals spotted the body in the enclosure and informed police. A team from Aronghata Police Station went to the scene, while members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) later joined the investigation.
Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Aronghata Police Station Md Monirul Islam said the victim had a bullet wound to the head.
"CID personnel are working at the scene. Further details will be available after the investigation progresses," he said.
The motive for the killing and the identities of those involved were not immediately known.
In a separate incident, a 24-year-old youth was critically injured after unidentified assailants shot and hacked him in the city's Labanchara area around 1:30pm.
The injured youth, Arif Sikder, son of Abul Kalam Sikder of Mathabhanga area under Labanchara Police Station, was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Police and locals said Arif was sitting with two other youths near Rupsha Riverview Eco Park when six assailants arrived on two motorcycles and opened fire.
A bullet struck Arif on the right side of his chest. The attackers then hacked him several times on both legs with sharp weapons before fleeing.
Locals rescued him and took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Labanchara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Syed Mosharraf Hossain said police were investigating the attack to identify the assailants and determine the motive, reports BSS.
The motive could not be established immediately, he added.
