Dhaka, 21 June-Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto inscribed his name into the record book by hitting a century in both innings of the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka, that fizzled out into a tame draw at Galle today.
Test cricket saw the first batter score centuries in both innings in 1909.
The feat was achieved by Australian opener Warren Bardsley against England at
the Oval. After scoring 136 in the first innings, he made 130 runs in the
second innings.
Shanto's twin century is the 96th instance of such feat with 78 batters
achieving this prestigious milestone. Shanto is one of the 15 batters who
have scored twin centuries more than once. Three of them have achieved this
feat thrice.
Apart from Shanto, Mominul Haque is the only Bangladeshi batter to have
scored centuries in both innings. In fact, Mominul was the first batter from
Bangladesh to have reached this milestone when he made 176 and 105 against
Sri Lanka in Chattogram in 2018.
Shanto is the 16th captain to score a twin century. Among them, Ricky Ponting
has such feat for three times as captain.
Australians have the most twin centuries with 25 while England are second
with 13.
The most twin centuries have been scored against England and the number is
16. The second most is against Australia, 15 times. Amongst the Test nation,
Afghanistan and Ireland, have no batter with twin centuries so far.
Australia's Adelaide Oval has seen twin centuries eight time, the most for a
venue.
Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva is the only batter to remain unbeaten in both
innings while scoring the twin centuries.
Australia's Allan Border is the only batter to have crossed 150-run in both
innings.
Six times two batters have scored twin centuries in the same Test. The last
time was against Bangladesh in Sylhet in 2024 by Sri Lanka's Dhananjaya de
Silva and Kamindu Mendis.
Two players have scored twin centuries on Test debut-West Indies' Lawrence
Rowe and Pakistan's Yasir Hamid.
England's Graham Gooch and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara had scored a triple
century and a century in the same match. Gooch did it against India in 1990
and Bangladesh were the receiving end when Sangakkara did it against them in
2014.
Six players have scored a century and a double century in the same match.
