Bangladesh were bowled out for just 64 in the first innings of the Mackay Test after a devastating spell of fast bowling from Australia’s Mitchell Starc.

After winning the opening Test by nine wickets, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side entered the second match with confidence. However, Bangladesh collapsed to 64 all out in just 34 overs, recording the fourth-lowest total in their Test history.

Starc did most of the damage, reducing Bangladesh to 12 for five within the first 6.4 overs. He conceded just four runs from his opening four overs, including three maidens.

The Australian left-armer struck with the first ball of the innings, dismissing Shadman Islam for a golden duck. He then removed Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque and Litton Das to complete a five-wicket haul.

Starc reached his five-wicket haul in just 22 balls, making it the fourth-fastest five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He eventually finished with six wickets for just 13 runs from 10 overs, including six maidens.

Bangladesh were in danger of being dismissed for their lowest-ever Test total after losing their ninth wicket for 39 runs. However, Taijul Islam struck Josh Hazlewood for a boundary off the final ball of the 30th over to help Bangladesh avoid their record-low score of 43.

Shariful Islam top-scored for Bangladesh with 14 runs, while Taijul remained unbeaten as the innings ended at 64.
