HC Rejects Chinmoy Das's Bail Plea in Sedition Case
The High Court has denied the bail application of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote and former ISKCON leader, in a sedition case. On Tuesday, the court also issued a rule asking the government to explain within two weeks why Chinmoy should not be granted bail.
The ruling came after a hearing on a petition filed by Chinmoy, who had sought bail in connection with the sedition charges. On October 25 last year, a large gathering of the Sanatani community took place in Chattogram under Chinmoy's leadership, leading to the filing of a sedition case against 19 individuals, including him, on October 31 for allegedly disrespecting the national flag.
Chinmoy, who was arrested on November 25 in Dhaka, had also led another large rally in Rangpur on November 22. Despite multiple attempts, his bail petitions were rejected by the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Saiful Islam on January 2 and December 11 last year.
The denial of bail by the Chattogram court led to violent clashes between Chinmoy’s supporters, law enforcement, and lawyers outside the court, culminating in the tragic murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif. Several additional cases have been filed against Chinmoy and others in the aftermath of the lawyer’s killing.
