Court decision

A Dhaka court today sentenced a man to imprisonment till his natural death for killing his neighbour’s two-year-old daughter throwing her from a three-storied building.

The convict Jannatul Wais alias Nahid was present in the court during the pronouncement of the verdict and was sent to jail with conviction warrant.

Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam of the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court of Dhaka delivered the verdict last noon. The court also fined him Taka 50,000.

According to the case document, victim Ayesha’s family used to live in a slum on Din Nath Sen Road in the capital’s Gendaria area. On January 5, 2019, Ayesha’s mother went to next-door house for cooking, leaving Ayesha in their house.

When Ayesha’s mother returned home, Ayesha was found nowhere.

While searching for the two-year-old child, locals found her bruised and bloodied body in a neighbouring alley. They rushed her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the physicians declared Ayesha dead.

Ayesha’s father Md Edris filed the case with Gendaria Police Station on January 7 of the year, accusing neighbour Nahid of raping and subsequently killing the child. Police arrested Nahid and on October 11, 2019, submitted the charge sheet against him. The court on January 27, 2021, framed charges against him and today pronounced the verdict after examining 18 of the 23 prosecution witnesses. - Special Correspondent
