HC Writ Seeks Suspension of Presidential Election Schedule
A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the constitutional validity of Article 70 and seeking suspension of the schedule for the upcoming presidential election.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand filed the petition on Thursday (13 August).
The Chief Election Commissioner, Parliament Secretariat secretary and other relevant officials have been made respondents.
The Election Commission announced the presidential election schedule on 6 August, setting 20 August for voting.
Under the schedule, voting will be held in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber from 2pm to 5pm if more than one candidate remains in the race.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced the schedule, with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin designated as the returning officer.
Candidates were required to submit nomination papers from 10am to 4pm on 13 August. The nominations will be scrutinised on 16 August, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until 18 August.
If multiple candidates remain after the withdrawal deadline, voting will take place in Parliament on 20 August.
