Ukrainian drones struck one of Russia’s largest oil refineries overnight, igniting a fire at the Kirishi facility in the Leningrad region, officials from both sides confirmed.
The Kirishi refinery, operated by Surgutneftegas, processes about 17.7 million metric tons of crude annually, making it one of Russia’s top three by output. Ukraine’s military said the strike was part of efforts to weaken Moscow’s war capacity.
Ukraine’s General Staff released images showing smoke and flames lighting up the night sky. Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that three drones were shot down, with debris sparking the blaze, later brought under control. No casualties were reported.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said more than 80 Ukrainian drones were intercepted across Russia, Crimea, and the Sea of Azov, though it did not comment on damage to the refinery.
The strike comes amid a series of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure that have already led to fuel shortages. Russian authorities have halted gasoline exports, with a full ban until 30 September and partial restrictions through October.
Meanwhile, a separate railway accident in the Leningrad region killed a locomotive driver, while an explosion on tracks in the Oryol region left three dead, including a National Guard member. Officials are investigating whether sabotage was involved.
The conflict, now in its fourth year, has increasingly turned drones into a decisive weapon, heightening fears of further escalation beyond Ukraine’s borders.
