Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) blocked the Shahbagh intersection this afternoon, demanding justice for the murder of Dhaka University student and fellow JCD activist Shahriar Alam Shammo.

Traffic in the surrounding areas came to a standstill as the protest began around 4:00pm. With vehicles stranded, many commuters abandoned buses and other transport to continue their journeys on foot.

Protesters also demanded the resignation of the Dhaka University vice-chancellor and proctor, holding them responsible for the deteriorating security situation on campus.

Alongside the Dhaka University unit, activists from Jagannath University, Tejgaon College, Dhaka College, Titumir College, and various other institutions under Dhaka-based and Dhaka Metropolitan JCD units joined the demonstration.

Top JCD leaders, including President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin, were present and addressed the crowd.

Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (2018–19 session) and literature secretary of the JCD's Sir AF Rahman Hall unit, was stabbed to death near Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13 following an altercation after a motorcycle collision.
