28 RU students nominated for PM's Gold Medal

A total of 28 students of Rajshahi University (RU) have been nominated for the Prime Minister's Gold Medal for their outstanding academic results in the academic years 2019, 2020 and 2021.


The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday published the final list of 469 students from universities across the country selected for the prestigious award.

RU has the second-highest number of nominees with 28 students, next to Dhaka University, which has 30 nominees.

According to the UGC list, Md Kaderi Kibria of the Department of Statistics and Mosammat Mariam Khatun of the Department of Biochemistry achieved the highest CGPA among the RU nominees, securing 3.98 each.

Sumaiya Afsana Sumi of the Department of Agronomy, Mobashira Anjum of the Department of Genetic Engineering, Al-Amin of the Department of Zoology and Rabeya Basri of the Department of Crop Science and Technology secured a CGPA of 3.97 each.

Among the other nominees, Hasmatullah of the Department of Arabic secured 3.91, Afsan Elahi of the Department of Law 3.82, Ramjan Ali of the Department of Banking and Insurance 3.91, Mustakim Khan of the Department of International Relations 3.82, Eshrat Jahan Ela of the Department of Botany 3.96, Md Shariful Islam of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering 3.87, Monica Amelia of the Department of Graphic Design 3.86 and Shahidullah of the Department of Islamic Studies 3.89.

Shamima Yasmin Shanta of the Department of Marketing secured 3.75, while Mosammat Eshrat Jahan of the Department of Economics secured 3.91.

Mosammat Azmira Khatun of the Department of Veterinary Sciences secured 3.96, Md Zabid Hasan of the Department of ICE 3.92, Khadizatul Kubra of the Department of Graphic Design 3.88, Samarendra Nath Das of the Department of Music 3.73, Mosammat Jannatun Naim Mitu of the Department of Law 3.76 and Mosammat Jannatul Mawa of the Department of Pharmacy 3.95.

Md Nahid Hasan Badhan of the Department of Accounting secured 3.87, Mosammat Hosne Ara Begum of the Department of Sociology 3.53, Sheikh Hasib Cheragi of the Department of EEE 3.95 and Munmun Nahar of the Department of Painting, Oriental Art and Printmaking 3.75.

Atul Maharjan and Somi Rauniyar of the Department of Medical Sciences secured 80.79 percent and 78.84 percent marks respectively. Their results were published in percentage rather than CGPA.

The UGC published the list of 469 nominated students after a gap of around six and a half years.

Of the total nominees, 178 are from the academic year 2019, 141 from 2020 and 150 from 2021.

Under the existing policy, each awardee will receive a medal made of 4.5 grams of 22-carat gold and 10 grams of silver, along with a certificate of honour.

The Prime Minister's Gold Medal is awarded to recognise outstanding academic achievements at the university level and encourage meritorious students to pursue higher education and research.

The UGC has been awarding the Prime Minister's Gold Medal since 2005, reports BSS.
