Hong Kong-based textile and apparel chain, Handa Industries Ltd. Chairman Han Chun met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State guest House Jamuna today.

Handa Industries Co, a Hong Kong-based textile and apparel manufacturer, has announced plans to invest $250 million in Bangladesh, significantly boosting the country’s textile sector and creating 25,000 jobs.

Chairman Han Chun revealed the expanded investment plan during a meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Initially, Handa had committed $150 million through a memorandum of understanding signed during the Bangladesh Investment Summit in April 2025. Following further assessments and strong support from local authorities, the company has now increased the planned investment to $250 million.

The company will establish three factories—two garment processing units and one knitting and dyeing facility—in Bangladesh. The first phase, worth $80 million, includes setting up a garment factory in the Mirsarai Economic Zone. The land lease agreement for this phase is scheduled to be signed on Wednesday. The second phase is expected to be finalised by the end of 2025.

“We decided to increase our investment after productive discussions with officials from BIDA, BEZA, and BEPZA,” said Han Chun. “We aim to introduce advanced technology into Bangladesh’s textile and garment sector through our operations.”

Officials from Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), and Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) noted that this is one of the largest single Chinese investments in the country’s textile industry.

Chief Adviser Prof Yunus welcomed the initiative, encouraging Handa to lead the way for further Chinese investments and to support local talent by training Bangladeshi designers to better understand global market preferences.

During the meeting, Han Chun also presented a factory design planned for Mirsarai, which Prof Yunus praised as “looking like a beautiful painting.”

Present at the meeting were BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud bin Harun, Principal Secretary Md Siraj Uddin Miah, SDG Principal Coordinator Lamiya Morshed, BEPZA Executive Chairman Abul Kalam Mohammad Ziaur Rahman, and Handa Industries President Heng Zeli.
