The government has proposed sweeping new travel benefits for senior citizens in a move aimed at strengthening social protection and easing mobility costs for older residents.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, while presenting the national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year in Parliament on Thursday, announced that citizens aged 65 years and above would be eligible for full fare exemption on government-operated trains. In addition, he proposed a 25 percent discount on metro rail fares for the same age group.

He said the initiative reflects the government’s recognition of the contributions made by senior citizens in nation-building and its continued commitment to their welfare. The proposal is part of a broader effort to expand financial protection measures and ensure that vulnerable groups are not left behind in the country’s development process.

“The role of senior citizens in nation-building is invaluable, and our government remains steadfast in its commitment to their welfare,” the Finance Minister said during his budget speech, highlighting social inclusion as a key pillar of fiscal planning.

According to the proposal, the benefits will apply to all eligible citizens using state-run rail services, offering free travel on trains operated under government authority. Metro rail users aged 65 and above will receive a 25 percent reduction in fares, providing partial relief in urban commuting costs where transport expenses are often higher.

Officials said the measure is designed not only to reduce financial pressure on elderly citizens but also to encourage greater mobility and social participation among them. The policy is expected to be implemented through existing transport systems, though further administrative guidelines are likely to follow after budget approval.

The Finance Minister also reiterated that the government aims to build a comprehensive social safety framework covering all citizens, ensuring equitable access to public services and development benefits.

Analysts say the proposal, if implemented effectively, could mark a significant step in expanding age-based social protection, particularly as the country’s elderly population continues to grow in both urban and rural areas.
