The government is set to propose an allocation of Tk1,062.5 crore in the FY2026–27 budget to expand the Farmer’s Card programme, aiming to bring 4.25 million farmers under the initiative across 100 upazilas.

Under the scheme, landless and marginal farmers will receive annual cash assistance of Tk2,500 through the card system, according to finance ministry sources.

Officials said the initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to modernise agriculture and strengthen support for grassroots farmers. The programme also aims to deliver 10 key public services directly to farmers through a unified platform.

The Farmer’s Card programme was formally launched on the first day of the Bengali New Year this year as part of efforts to introduce structural reforms in the agricultural sector and improve service delivery at the local level.

The proposed allocation is expected to be included in the FY2026–27 national budget, scheduled to be placed in Parliament on Thursday.

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury is expected to unveil the budget, which will outline the government’s fiscal priorities for the upcoming financial year.

In addition to the Farmer’s Card programme, the government is expected to propose a combined allocation of Tk43,335 crore for the agriculture, food, fisheries and livestock sectors in FY2026–27, equivalent to 0.63 percent of GDP.

In the revised budget for FY2025–26, the allocation for these sectors stood at Tk37,126 crore, or 0.61 percent of GDP.
