BGB Warns of Stronger Response to Ongoing BSF Border Killings

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today issued a stern warning against the continued killings along the border by India's Border Security Force (BSF), emphasizing that any further incidents will prompt a more forceful response.

"We have made it abundantly clear that such incidents are entirely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. If these killings persist, it will undoubtedly raise serious questions about how we address illegal Indian crossings into Bangladesh," stated BGB Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui during a flag-raising ceremony in Cox’s Bazar.

He emphasized that violence is never a solution to border disputes. "We will continue to protest these killings, and if another such incident occurs, we will not hesitate to adopt an even tougher stance," he declared.

Maj Gen Siddiqui's remarks came a day after the fatal shooting of Bangladeshi national Md Al-Amin, 32, by BSF personnel in Kasba upazila. Reports indicate that the BSF fired rubber bullets at a group of individuals near the border at approximately 7:30 p.m., striking Al-Amin. Despite being taken to a nearby hospital by BSF, Al-Amin succumbed to his injuries by 9:00 p.m.

The BGB chief explained that the incident occurred during an altercation between BSF and a group of 15-20 people attempting to cross the border illegally. "After BSF intervened, a confrontation ensued, during which rubber bullets were fired, one of which struck Al-Amin in a vulnerable spot, leading to his death. BSF has also claimed that one of their personnel was injured in the altercation and has provided us with images," Maj Gen Siddiqui added.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, the BGB director general reaffirmed Bangladesh's unwavering position against border killings. "We have consistently maintained that illegal crossings should be handled by legal means, not through lethal force. If such incidents continue, we will intensify our protests and adopt a more stringent approach to border management," he asserted.

In addition, Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, speaking as the chief guest at the ceremony, underscored the importance of strengthening BGB's capacity to secure the border.

"Today, we have added three additional units to the 64 BGB Battalion, which will enhance our capabilities. But we must continue to expand and improve our border security measures," the home adviser emphasized.

Regarding the ongoing Rohingya crisis, he noted that the recent influx of refugees remains a significant challenge for Bangladesh. "Around 60,000 Rohingya refugees have entered Bangladesh recently. While we remain committed to securing our borders, we must also take into account the humanitarian concerns and international pressure," he said.

On the topic of the Kasba border killing, Jahangir acknowledged that despite ongoing high-level discussions between the BGB and BSF, such incidents continue to occur. "We are actively working to reduce these incidents, but the situation remains highly complex," he concluded.
