The deceased, identified as Barikul Islam, 36, hailed from Namojgnathpur in the Durlavpur union, according to local sources.
Saidur Rahman, a ward-9 member of Durlavpur Union Parishad, shared that Barikul and several other farmers had gone to irrigate their fields near the border that morning when BSF personnel from the Bajitpur camp in Murshidabad region began pursuing them.
While most farmers managed to escape, Barikul was reportedly captured by the BSF soldiers. Saidur claims the BSF agents then brutally beat him before dumping his lifeless body on a riverbank inside Indian territory.
As of now, Barikul's body remains in the Indian area, the sources added.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has not yet confirmed the incident.
"We have not received any reports regarding this, nor has the victim's family contacted us," Lt. Col. Monir-uz-Zaman, commander of the BGB’s 53rd Battalion in Chapainawabganj, told UNB.
"We are investigating the matter," he said.
