The International Day for Biological Diversity is being observed worldwide today (May 22), drawing attention to the urgent need to protect ecosystems under the theme “Acting locally for global impact.”

Designated by the United Nations, the day highlights the accelerating loss of biodiversity and calls for stronger local and community-level action to support global sustainability efforts.

The observance stresses that reversing biodiversity decline depends on coordinated efforts from communities, organisations and governments working together to protect natural habitats and species.

This year’s campaign also underscores the limited time remaining to meet international commitments under the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals, with only four years left to achieve key targets.

Environmental advocates say the focus on local action reflects growing recognition that meaningful progress often begins within communities, where conservation efforts can directly influence ecosystems and long-term environmental resilience.
