Biman Bangladesh Airlines has signed a major agreement with Boeing to purchase 14 aircraft, marking the largest expansion of its fleet in the national carrier’s modern history.

The signing took place at a hotel in Dhaka on 30 April, with senior representatives from Biman and Boeing formalising the deal.

Under the agreement, valued at around $3.7 billion at list prices, Biman will acquire a mix of wide-body and narrow-body aircraft to strengthen both long-haul and regional operations. The order includes two Boeing 777-9s, eight 787-10 Dreamliners and four 737-8 aircraft.

With this purchase, Biman’s fleet is expected to grow from 19 to 33 aircraft over the next decade, according to airline sources.

Boeing officials said the deal will make Biman one of the few airlines operating the full family of 787 Dreamliners, offering greater flexibility and efficiency on high-demand routes, including the Middle East, Europe and North America.

Officials from the civil aviation sector said the expansion supports Bangladesh’s goal of becoming a regional aviation hub. The government will provide a sovereign guarantee to facilitate the purchase.

The deal continues Biman’s long-standing partnership with Boeing, following earlier acquisitions of 787 Dreamliners and other aircraft over the past decade.

Alongside the purchase agreement, discussions are also ongoing about fleet expansion strategies and short-term aircraft leasing to meet operational needs before deliveries begin over the coming years.
