Dhaka's air quality remained unhealthy on Monday morning, with the capital recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 167 at 8:05am.

With this reading, Dhaka ranked sixth among the world's most polluted cities.

Vietnam's Hanoi topped the list with an AQI score of 190, followed by India's Kolkata at 187 and Indonesia's Jakarta at 178.

On Sunday, Dhaka also ranked sixth among the world's most polluted cities, recording an AQI score of 166 at 8:31am.

An AQI score of 50 or below indicates good air quality, while readings between 51 and 100 are considered moderate. Scores between 101 and 150 are classified as unhealthy for sensitive groups, while readings from 151 to 200 indicate unhealthy air quality.

AQI scores between 201 and 300 are considered very unhealthy, while readings above 300 are classified as hazardous and may pose serious health risks.

The AQI is a daily indicator of how clean or polluted the air is and the potential health effects associated with exposure to air pollution.

In Bangladesh, the index is calculated using five major pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone.
