The deceased were identified as Hafizul Islam, 40, a resident of Miazi Bari under Pathan Nagar union in Chhagalnaiya upazila, and his mother Fatematuzzohra, 63.
According to witnesses and police, the Chattala Express train hit the CNG-run auto-rickshaw when it attempted to cross the rail tracks at the Godown Quarter rail gate area ignoring the signal around 7pm, leaving it completely mangled and the passengers critically injured.
Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to Feni General Hospital, where doctors declared Hafizul Islam dead.
His mother Fatematuzzohra was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but she died on the way, said their relative Masum Billah.
Witness Didarul Islam said the auto-rickshaw was heading towards Trunk Road from the hospital area when it violated the signal and got onto the rail tracks.
There were five people in the auto-rickshaw, and three of them managed to jump off before the collision, he added.
Feni Railway Station Master Md Harun train movement resumed shortly after the accident.
Sub-Inspector Iqbal Hossain of Feni Railway Police said Hafizul’s body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.
A case of unnatural death was filed with Laksam GRP Police Station.
