Three people were killed and at least 16 others injured after a passenger bus broke through a roadside railing and plunged into a ditch on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Munshiganj on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred in the Hasara area of Sreenagar upazila when a bus operated by Darshana Paribahan was travelling from Chuadanga to Dhaka.

Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed the incident.

One of the deceased was identified as Rukunuzzaman Ronju, 55, from Chuadanga. The identities of the other two victims were not immediately known.

Shafiqul Islam said the bus lost control while overtaking a covered van, reportedly due to excessive speed. It broke through the road railing, crossed the service lane and fell into a nearby ditch.

Two rescue units from the Sreenagar Fire Service Station reached the scene after receiving the report and launched a rescue operation.

Rescuers recovered three bodies from the scene. Eleven injured passengers were taken by fire service ambulance to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, while five others received first aid at the scene.

The three bodies were handed over to highway police, the fire service official added.
