Three people, including a truck driver and two motorcyclists, were killed and 15-20 bus passengers injured in two separate road accidents at Atharomile in Dumuria upazila on the Khulna-Satkhira highway here today.

The deceased were identified as Jinnat Mia, 35, a truck driver from Moktarpur village in Munshiganj district and motorcyclists Abdur Rouf Gazi, 43, son of late Abdul Barik Gazi, and Yunus Sardar, 25, son of Abdul Malek Sardar of Narnia village in Dumuria upazila of the district.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kharnia Highway Police Station Munshi Parvez Ahmed confirmed the deaths.

According to local sources, highway police and Fire Service and Civil Defence officials, the truck belonging to Crown Cement Company was returning to Khulna after unloading cement in Satkhira when it collided head-on with a passengers' bus travelling from Khulna to Satkhira around 2:30 pm on Wednesday.

The truck veered off the road, while the bus plunged into a water-filled ditch beside the highway. The truck driver and bus passengers were injured in the collision.

Critically injured Jinnat was rescued and taken to Dumuria Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician Dr Tasmia Akter declared him dead.

Local residents claimed that the bus was full of passengers and at least 45 people had been injured. The injured were taken to different hospitals and clinics in Tala Upazila Health Complex and Satkhira Medical College and Hospital.

However, OC Munshi Parvez Ahmed said police had not found any injured bus passengers at the scene.

In another accident, Abdur Rouf Gazi and Yunus Sardar were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a speeding bus at nearly the same location around 1:30
am on Wednesday.

According to locals and police, Rouf was a fish wholesaler at Chuknagar Bazar in Dumuria upazila.

On Tuesday evening, he went to the market with Yunus, an employee at his business, to pay outstanding dues to several fish farmers from neighbouring Tala upazila who had sold fish at his wholesale outlet.

After settling the payments, they were returning home around 1:30am when a Satkhira-bound bus coming from the opposite direction hit their motorcycle near Atharomile bus stand, leaving both riders dead on the spot.

OC Munshi Parvez Ahmed said a case had been filed over the incident. The bodies of the two victims were handed over to their families after completion of legal procedures, reports BSS.
