At least 20 people, including two children, were killed in separate road accidents across Bangladesh on the first day of Eid-ul-Azha on Thursday, highlighting growing concerns over highway safety during the holiday rush.
Among the fatalities, five were reported in Gopalganj, while three people each died in Chattogram and Gaibandha. Two deaths each were recorded in Dinajpur, Faridpur, and Patuakhali, while one person each was killed in Madaripur, Tangail, and Narail.
In Chattogram’s Karnaphuli upazila, three people were killed and at least 30 others injured when an Eagle Paribahan bus collided with a leguna around 9:00 pm. Witnesses alleged the bus was travelling on the wrong side of the road at the time of the crash.
Of the injured, at least 12 were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
In Gopalganj, five people, including three members of the same family, were killed when a motorcycle collided with a bus at Bedgram bus stand on the Dhaka-Khulna highway.
The victims included Sohag, 40, his pregnant wife, and their six-year-old son, who were travelling from Dhaka to their ancestral home in Pirojpur to celebrate Eid.
In Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila, a 45-year-old woman, Maleka Begum, was killed after being struck by a speeding motorcycle. She was the wife of a local veterinary practitioner.
In a separate incident shortly after midnight in the same district, a local leader of the banned Chhatra League and a rickshaw puller were crushed to death by a passenger bus in the Raigram area of the municipality.
The series of fatal crashes on Eid day has renewed concerns over reckless driving, traffic management, and road safety during one of the country’s busiest travel periods.
