At least four people were killed and around 20-25 others injured after a passenger bus carrying around 50 people lost control and fell into a roadside ditch in front of Shialdangi Mosque in Khoksa upazila of Kushtia on Saturday morning.

The identities of the deceased could not be confirmed yet.

Officer-in-Charge of Kushtia Highway Police Station Abu Obayed confirmed this accident occurred.

The OC said a Tanhha Paribahan bus was travelling from Rajbari towards Kushtia when it nearly collided with a van.

“In an attempt to avoid hitting the van, the driver lost control after a sand-laden truck came from the opposite direction, and the bus fell into the ditch,” he said.

Khoksa Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Md Ariful Haque said two bodies were recovered and kept at the upazila health complex, while 20 injured passengers were brought there for treatment.

He said four critically injured victims were referred to Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital.

Kushtia General Hospital Resident Medical Officer Dr Iqbal Hasan said one woman and one man among the critically injured died after being taken to the hospital.

The remaining two injured men are currently undergoing treatment, reports UNB.

Doctors said the number of casualties may rise as several injured passengers remain in critical condition.
